Sanctus Cyrillus, Episcopus, Confessor et Doctor Ecclesiae / St Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop & Doctor of the Church

Saint Cyril of Alexandria (c. 376–444 AD) was a Patriarch of Alexandria and a Doctor of the Church. He is best known for his fierce defense of the Incarnation—the belief that Jesus is one divine person with two natures—and for championing the title Theotokos (Mother of God) for the Virgin Mary.

Photo with St Cyril’s Prayer taken in the Pantheon, Rome, with the icon given by Byzantine Emperor Phocas to Pope Boniface IV. Known as the Madonna of the Pantheon (or Madonna Odigitria). Gifted to commemorate the historic 609 AD consecration of the ancient pagan temple into the Christian basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres, it remains one of Rome’s oldest and most venerated Marian icons.
